"The Lugar Series is an anchor in terms of friendships and associations with forward-thinking women who are natural leaders. We were enabled to candidly discuss issues, express concerns and explore innovative solutions. This kind of interaction is vital to leadership quality and is well-nurtured by the program."

Since its inception in 1990, 15-20 outstanding Hoosier women have successfully completed the Lugar Series program each year. While the Lugar Series does not take positions on issues or support individual candidates, each woman is encouraged to explore and develop her own philosophy and then use that to serve her community in expanded ways.

Traditionally, 85 percent of the program participants increase their levels of involvement in the political process by becoming members of public service boards and commissions, party organization leaders, candidates for office, officeholders, key campaign volunteers or governmental staff appointees.

Women of the Lugar Series are serving as mayors, state legislators, state officeholders, White House staff members, and Presidential appointees. They are county commissioners, city council members, trustees, and clerks. They serve on school boards, public safety boards, zoning boards and a host of other governmental and political commissions.
